In 2006, the National Eye Institute (NEI) launched the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) to see if a modified combination of vitamins, minerals, and fish oil can further slow the progression of vision loss from AMD. One of the primary purposes of the study was to evaluate the effect of the two dietary xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) that accumulate in the macula and two omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs), docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, on vision health.
